Background of the Study
Environmental education plays a crucial role in shaping sustainable behaviors and promoting long-term economic and ecological balance. In Nigeria, environmental challenges such as pollution, deforestation, and waste management have underscored the need for increased public awareness and education on environmental issues. Environmental education initiatives, implemented through schools, community programs, and media campaigns, aim to inform citizens about the importance of sustainable practices and to empower them to adopt behaviors that minimize environmental impact (Adeniyi, 2023). When individuals are educated about environmental issues, they are more likely to support policies and practices that contribute to sustainable development, such as recycling, energy conservation, and sustainable resource management. These behaviors can drive economic benefits by reducing waste, lowering energy costs, and fostering green innovations.
In Nigeria, various stakeholders—including government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and private enterprises—have invested in environmental education programs. However, the effectiveness of these initiatives in translating awareness into sustainable economic practices remains uncertain. There is a need to evaluate whether environmental education has led to measurable changes in consumer behavior, business practices, and community development. This study explores the impact of environmental education on sustainable economic practices in Nigeria by examining changes in public attitudes, behaviors, and economic indicators related to sustainability. The research will combine survey data, focus group discussions, and case studies to provide a comprehensive evaluation of the effectiveness of environmental education and its role in promoting a sustainable economy (Chinwe, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Despite significant investments in environmental education, sustainable economic practices in Nigeria remain inconsistent, with many communities and businesses continuing unsustainable practices that contribute to environmental degradation (Ibrahim, 2023). The disconnect between environmental awareness and actionable behavior is a major challenge, as the knowledge imparted through education does not always translate into practical changes in consumption, production, or waste management. Factors such as limited resources, economic constraints, and cultural practices may inhibit the adoption of sustainable behaviors. Additionally, the lack of effective monitoring and evaluation mechanisms makes it difficult to assess the long-term impact of environmental education on economic practices. This study seeks to investigate the factors that hinder the conversion of environmental knowledge into sustainable economic action and to propose strategies that enhance the practical impact of environmental education on both individual behavior and business practices, thereby contributing to broader sustainable development goals.
Objectives of the Study
